DepEd allows 244 schools to raise tuition

Manila, Philippines — The Department of Education (DepEd) confirmed yesterday that 244 private schools in Regions II, IV-B, VIII, IX, XII, XIII and NCR were allowed to increase their tuition from eight to 12 per cent for school year 2014-2015.

Partial data released by the DepEd Central Office revealed that in NCR alone, about 172 private schools were allowed to raise their tuition by eight percent. Forty-one schools who failed to comply with DepEd requirements on tuition increase will retain their old rates.

DepEd Assistant Secretary Tonisito Umali said the number of schools (285) that applied for tuition increase this year is lower compared to last year. “Mas mababa ang nag-apply ngayon,” (Only a few schools applied to raise their tuition this year) he said. “[The] overall trend is maaari pang bumaba ito lalo na sa NCR (this number could still be lessened especially in the NCR),” he added.
