FILIPINOS PREPARE FOR HOLIDAY BREAK

MANILA, Philippines — Filipinos travelling to their provinces to visit their departed loved ones and relatives for the All Souls Day break are expected to flock airports, sea ports, bus terminals and provincial train stations starting Friday.

Mostly travelling by land, passengers will leave early for the “Undas” break to take advantage of the long weekend preceding the All Saints and All Souls days on November 1(Tuesday) and 2(Wednesday), respectively.

The Provincial Bus Operators’ Association of the Philippines (PBOAP) expects passenger volume to reach its peak on Saturday and Sunday and said its member bus companies have enough fleet and drivers to serve the commuting public.

PBOAP president Alex Yague said the traditional exodus of passengers to the provinces during “Undas” will help provincial bus operators and drivers to recover revenue losses they endured due to the previous calamities that plagued Central and Northern Luzon, and the Bicol provinces.

“Our bus operators and drivers experienced drought because of the typhoons and flooding in Luzon and Bicol. But we expect to recover our losses this “undas’’ break,” he said.

But Yague said the recent implementation of value-added tax (VAT) on toll at the six operational toll ways that connect Metro Manila to the provinces and the unabated fuel price increases offset whatever profit bus companies will generate from the “undas” break.
