‘Gener’ Death Toll Rises to 8; Stormy Weather to Prevail



The death toll from typhoon “Gener” (international name Saola) has risen to eight while the number of persons displaced has exceeded 145,000, according to the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC).

The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said stormy weather would continue to prevail over extreme Northern Luzon as Gener maintained strength while slowly moving away from the country.

A report by the NDRRMC showed that the latest fatalities – most of them from drowning – were in Bataan, Rizal, Batangas, Cavite and Zamboanga del Norte.

They were identified as Ieyan Hayo, 28, of barangay Ipan, Mariveles; Bernard Buzon, 35, whose body was recovered in seawaters within Rosario, Cavite; Merly Datinginoo, 45, of Tingloy Batangas, and Renante Jauculan Jr., 10 of Dipolog City.

A certain Danieles Hipolito died after being electrocuted while crossing the bridge in Bacoor, Cavite.

NDRRMC reported last Monday the deaths of Ronald Necor, 33, of Bugasong, Antique who drowned; Teodoro Flores, 42, of San Pablo, Laguna, who was hit by a fallen coconut tree; and Ernest Flores of Alaminos, Laguna, who died of a respiratory illness while the ship carrying him was battered by waves.

Two people were also reportedly killed by landslides in Itogon, Benguet.
