Supsup tops 2 Miss 'U' surveys

MANILA, Philippines -- The Philippines’ Shamcey Supsup leads in two worldwide surveys on candidates favored to win the 2011 Miss Universe beauty pageant in Sao Paulo, Brazil, on September 12.

Telemundo, an American TV network that broadcasts in Spanish, has consistently shown Supsup in the lead. As of 3 p.m. Sunday, Miss Philippines remains in top spot with 1,312,018 votes. Miss Venezuela was second with 1,094,993; Miss Nicaragua, 702,151; Miss Thailand, 509,249; and Miss Dominican Republic, 422, 287.

Another survey, sponsored by missosology, one of the websites on beauty pageants, also had Supsup leading.

In the missosology survey, Miss Philippines received 1,908 votes followed by Miss Puerto Rico with 814, Miss Indonesia with 433, Miss Mexico with 234 and Miss Venezuela with 222.

But the survey that matters most is the fan vote being conducted by the Miss Universe Organization in which the leading candidate lands a spot in the pageant’s semifinals. The results will be announced on coronation night (September 13 in the Philippines).

Local supporters of Supsup can vote for her at www.missuniverse. com or www.nbc.com.

Last year’s Miss Philippines, Maria Venus Raj, topped the MUO survey but the results did not count in the selection process. This year the organizers changed the rules.

This developed as Supsup and 14 other candidates have been invited to grace the Itaipava GT Brasil car race yesterday. This is the second time she was invited to a special event related to the pageant.

Last Thursday, Supsup was in the group that took part in “Operation Smile.”

Aside from Supsup, other candidates invited to the car race were Miss Angola, Miss Australia, Miss Bolivia, Miss China, Miss France, Miss Italy, Miss Kosovo, Miss Malaysia, Miss Mexico, Miss Portugal, Miss Puerto Rico, Miss USA, and Miss Venezuela.

They will be joined by reigning Miss Universe Ximena Navarette of Mexico. She will act as the checkered flag girl.

Supsup said she is enjoying her stay in Sao Paulo, despite the hectic schedules of fittings, social events, videotaping, tours, and personality interviews.

She said her roommates are Miss Korea Sora Chong and Miss Montenegro Nikolina Loncar whom she considers as her best friends. “We get together very well, we do things together most of the time, and we love to hang out in the hotel’s 8th floor where the computers are located. That’s where we keep in touch with the people in the Philippines via ym,” she said.
