Britain’s ‘worst unrest’ spreads to cities

LONDON: Britain’s worst riots in a generation spread to more cities on Wednesday with three people killed while defending their community although London, where the unrest began, was quiet because of strong police presence.

In Manila, the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) has raised alert level one in London after a Filipino was hurt at the height of the riots.

As the nation endured a fourth night of unrest, youths rampaged through Manchester burning and looting shops in what police called the most extreme violence to hit Britain’s third largest city in 30 years.

Looters also caused mayhem in several cities in the industrial Midlands, including Birmingham, where three Asian men died after being hit by a car.

But in London there was no repeat of the wave of violence which left parts of the capital in flames on Monday night, as mobs took to the streets to defend their communities and 16,000 police made a show of force.

Police have arrested more than 1,100 people across the country for violence, disorder and looting since the riots erupted on Saturday in the north London district of Tottenham after police shot dead a man.
