MANILA, Philippines – Based on the data of the Department of Health (DoH), there are now 56,005 reported cases of dengue from January to August this year. It is 24.35% lower than last year’s wherein the DoH recorded 74,028 dengue cases in the first eight months of 2010.
Majority of the victims of dengue are in the National Capital Region (NCR) with Quezon City as the hotspot followed by Caloocan City and Manila.
The DoH said that public hospitals got what it takes to fight dengue but the health bureau also launch several medical centers where patients could seek medical help.
Likewise, the health department launched Aksyon Barangay Kontra Dengue (ABaKaDa) which encourages the local government all throughout the archipelago to do necessary steps to prevent dengue.
The very purpose of the program is to involve everyone in taking action to clean the possible nests and breeding sites of mosquitoes bringing dengue virus.
While it is clear that the Department of Health is serious in its campaigns against dengue, isn’t it a bit too late for them to start such campaigns?
Had they started these campaigns in January, the number of cases could have been radically lowered.
