Talk ‘N Text moves into a tie for No. 1 spot after rout of San Miguel


The Talk ‘N Text Tropang Texters put together an impressive performance in a rout of rival San Miguel, 113-93, in a crucial PBA Commissioner’s Cup clash on Wednesday at the SMART-Araneta Coliseum.

Talk ‘N Text (7-3) grabbed a share of the lead in the standings, tying Purefoods while dealing a serious blow to the playoff hopes of San Miguel, which dropped to 3-7.


Import Ivan Johnson had 41 points, 19 rebounds and five steals while Matt Ganuelas-Rosser added 22 markers to lead the Tropang Texters.

Ranidel De Ocampo added 17 points and Larry Fonacier chipped in with 12.

Talk ‘N Text put the game away in the third quarter, where they pushed an eight-point halftime lead up to a whopping 28-point margin. They outscored San Miguel, 32-10, over one stretch in the period.

Johnson and Ganuelas-Rosser combined to score 21 of the team’s 32 third quarter points. The Talk ‘N Text import provided 13 points in the period, scoring repeatedly on putbacks and even a three-pointer as the Tropang Texters blew the game wide open.

They led, 56-48, at the half but turned that into an 88-62 advantage heading into the final period.

Their highest lead of the game was at 29, 104-75, in the fourth quarter.

San Miguel’s Arizona Reid had 32 points and 17 rebounds to lead the Beermen. June Mar Fajardo added 20 markers.

Arwind Santos finished with just seven points in 29 minutes of play. He left the game early to attend to his mother, who was rushed to a nearby hospital from the arena during the third quarter of the game.

The first quarter was a wild affair with Talk ‘N Text firing off an impressive 26-9 start to open the contest before San Miguel scored 14 unanswered points to climb right back into the game.

By the end of the period, the Beermen had come back to within one point, 28-27, with Reid leading all scorers with 13.

San Miguel even claimed the lead early in the second but Talk ‘N Text mounted a 9-1 run to take an eight-point advantage, 50-42. The Beermen cut the margin back down to three late in the period before the Tropang Texters closed out strong by scoring the last five points of the half to take a 56-48 lead into the halftime break.

Fonacier hit a three-pointer and Johnson, who scored 13 points in the second, stuffed in a monster jam to end the period.

Johnson already had a double-double of 18 points and 10 boards at the half while Ganuelas-Rosser had 12. The pair combined to shoot an impressive 12-for-19 (63.2%) in the first half.

The Beermen are in danger of missing the Commissioner’s Cup playoffs with only eight teams qualifying for the quarterfinal round.

San Miguel is in 11th, ahead of only expansion team Blackwater (2-7) in the standings.
