TRANSPORTATION Secretary Joseph Emilio Abaya said on Monday that the Metro Rail Transit 3 (MRT3) fare will increase by P10 next year after his department designed its budget for 2012 and 2013 to provide fewer subsidies for the railway.
Once approved, the current fare from Taft Avenue in Pasay City to North Avenue in Quezon City would increase from P15 to P25.
Abaya told reporters that his department doesn’t have a timetable for the implementation of the fare increase.
This came after earlier reports said that MalacaƱang already approved the P8.63-billion MRT3 Capacity Expansion Project, which involves buying 52 more light rail vehicles. This would increase the railway’s capacity by 60 percent.
Another report said that expenses for train maintenance from subsidies to MRT3’s operating and maintenance budget increased by P1 billion this year, from P770 million to P1.77 billion.
