Gian Chiu, a young Filipino player who honed his skills in the United States while playing for NCAA Division III school Oberlin College, is working out with the Philippine Patriots in the ASEAN Basketball League.
Patriots team manager Erick Arejola told InterAKTV that Chiu, a former Ateneo high school star, has been training in the team for two weeks now.
“He has the potential. He’s a legitimate 6-foot-9 player, but he’s still not yet in tiptop condition as he has been idle playing for the past few months,” Arejola said in a telephone interview. “But he has great footwork and good shooting touch. I’m sure coach Glenn Capacio is just waiting for the right time when to include him in our line up.”
After leaving Ateneo, Chiu played for Desert Christian High in California before attending Oberlin. He had a promising rookie season for the Yeoman in 2007-08, starting 21 games and scoring in double-figures three times. He was second on the team in blocked shots, third in rebounds and field goal percentage, and fifth in scoring (5.4 points per game) and minutes played.
But his development stalled with limited playing time in his sophomore season. He sat out his third and fourth years before playing last season, again receiving limited minutes.
