The Senate impeachment court will resume today the trial of Supreme Court Chief Justice Renato Corona and the prosecution is set to present Commissioner Kim Henares of the Bureau of Internal Revenue as witness.
Nailing the Chief Justice down on charges of having allegedly accumulated ill-gotten wealth would just be a simple case of “connecting the dots,” MalacaƱang spokesman Edwin Lacierda said on Monday,
Henares is expected to present income-tax returns filed by Corona since the time he assumed office as associate justice of the Supreme Court.
Rep. Miro Quimbo of Marikina City (Metro Manila), the lead spokesman for the 11-man House panel, said that Henares will present “damaging evidence” against the Chief Justice.
He added that Corona’s tax records will boost their charges under Article 2 that the chief magistrate amassed ill-gotten wealth.
“We expect the defense panel to block this new damaging evidence against the Chief Justice because they don’t want the public to realize that he might have amassed wealth that he cannot justify legally,” Quimbo said.
“If he has nothing to hide, then he should allow the prosecution to present his tax records without delay and objection,” he added. “What are the ghosts in the [tax returns]? They keep on saying that he is a man of no ordinary means, then what are they afraid of?”
Article 2 alleged that Corona has pieces of property that were not declared in his statements since 2002.
