FLOODS HIT NEW AREAS IN VISAYAS, MINDANAO


THE weather has taken a turn for the worse not only in Mindanao but also in Luzon and the Visayas, triggering flash floods that forced thousands of residents to flee to safety on Tuesday.

The twist prompted the government to warn flood survivors in Cagayan de Oro and Iligan cities in Northern Mindanao in southern Philippines to brace for fresh floods, just days after tropical storm Sendong (international codename: Washi) devastated the region, leaving more than 2,000 dead or missing.

Mindanao, Visayas and Luzon are the country’s three main island groups.

The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council said in a late-night bulletin on Monday that a weather disturbance that could develop into a typhoon had dumped heavier than normal rainfall over the entire Mindanao, including the provinces of Agusan del Norte, Agusan del Sur and its capital Butuan City, Dinagat Island, Surigao del Norte and Surigao del Sur.

In Luzon, flooding was reported in Oriental Mindoro province.

Before dawn of Tuesday, Surigao del Sur was struck by a magnitude 5.1 earthquake, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said.
