NCAA FINALS: BACKUP KEYS SAN BEDA’S GAME 1 VICTORY OVER SAN SEBASTIAN

San Beda rode on the fourth quarter efforts of second stringer Mar Villahermosa to beat San Sebastian, 75-63, in a highly-physical game 1 of the senior’s basketball finals NCAA Season 87 at the SMART-Araneta Coliseum.

Villahermosa took over the chores of a sick Garvo Lanete, a member of the league’s Mythical Five who was held to a season-low six points. A former University of San Jose-Recoletos standout, Villahermosa tallied ten of his 15 points in the final period, including a left corner three-pointer with 2:59 left to seal the victory for the Red Lions.

“Masama ang timpla ni Gabo [Lanete] kanina,” said San Beda coach Frankie Lim. “He wasn’t feeling well for a couple of days now so off ang timing niya. Buti nag-step up si Mar leading us in fastbreaks and three-pointers. I’m just happy for him that he played that kind of game in his final year.”

San Sebastian coach Topex Robinson was ejected with 1:50 left the game after a disqualifying technical foul for complaining to the referees.

It appeared that San Beda was the more collected team despite San Sebastian’s physicality.
