Missing in Bilibid: Killer Rolito Go

MANILA, Philippines (UPDATED) - Convicted killer Rolito Go is missing from the New Bilibid Prison, reports said Wednesday, August 15, with his sister saying he was "abducted."

The Department of Justice said his sister claims Go and his nephew Clemence Yu, who acts as his nurse, were abducted, and the captors are asking for a P1-million ransom, GMA News reported. The two were found missing during the morning headcount.

Go is suffering from colon cancer, and needs medical attention.

ABS-CBN News said Justice Secretary Leila de Lima has ordered officials of the DOJ and the Bureau of Corrections to investigate the matter. As of 1 pm Wednesday, officials of the BuCor and the DOJ are in a closed-door meeting discussing the matter.

A wealthy businessman, Go was convicted for the death of Eldon Maguan, a De La Salle engineering student, in 1991, after a traffic altercation in Greenhills, San Juan. Go, then 43 years old, broke a one-way portion of Wilson St and shot Maguan in the head while the latter was seated in his car. Maguan had just bought a pizza. He was 25.

It was one of the most sensational murders in the Philippines during that period.

In 1993, a local court convicted Go and sentenced him to life imprisonement. He bolted a local jail before that however but was captured later.

In 2009, Go was moved out of maximum security in New Bilibid, prompting an outcry from the Maguan family. In a minimum security area, prisoners are allowed to move around the compound without escorts.

Under the Arroyo administration, Go sought executive clemency, but this was opposed by the Maguan family.
