Dengue Mosquito has New Armies

The dreadful dengue mosquito is rebuilding its strength with its new partner and  new armies to spread dengue virus.

The Aedes albopictus, is the new partner of dengue mosquito Aedes aegypti, which the Philippine Association of Entomologists (PAE) observed, is increasingly propagating in human dwelling places.
According to Dr. Barbara LaviƱa Caoili, PAE Secretary, Aedes albopictus virtually “works hand-in-hand” with Aedes aegypti covering the nighttime biting till sun up. Ae. aegypti is usually aggressive during the daytime particularly between 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. and around 4 and 5 p.m.
In a laboratory study,  Ae. albopictus was found aggressive from 6 p.m. onwards making the transmittal of dengue virus almost round-the-clock this time.
Where does Ae.Albopictus come from? Ae. albopictus is known to live in forested areas. With more forested areas being turned into residential developments, people are moving into the natural habitats of these dengue-lamok species. And with the current warm temperature, Caoili said dengue-lamok can easily breed. Climate change is raising temperatures, as well as increasing humidity and rainfall. This creates tropical and sub-tropical conditions that are ideal for day and night dengue-lamok to thrive in.
Quezon City, Manila, Caloocan, Pasig and Taguig top the list of dengue cases, according to the latest statistics from the Department of Health.
“Previously, researchers weren’t paying a lot of attention to Ae. Albopictus. Results of the study show that Ae. albopictus, known as a secondary vector of dengue virus, presents a new danger to humans,” said Caoili. “This is serious so we need to upgrade our protection”.
And because of the increased threat, chemists had developed a new repellant that will quell away not only the Ae.aegypti mosquito but Ae.Albopictus as well. Guaranteed to give longer hours of protection, PAE found the new Green Cross Insect Repellant to be more effective against the dreadful mosquitoes.
“This is more effective than the usual brand because aside from being hypoallergenic, it gives anti-bacterial protection and is kid-friendly,” said Bianca Mayo, Brand Manager for New Categories of Green Cross Insect Repellant.
