MANILA, Philippines - Former President Joseph Estrada has ruled out another run for the presidency or any elective post on the national level, pinning his party’s hopes of reclaiming political supremacy on his former running mate, Vice President Jejomar C. Binay.
To underscore his trust in Binay’s leadership, Estrada introduced the Vice President as the country’s “future president” during a testimonial dinner for the former President in Taguig Monday night. The book, “Ito ang Pilipino: A tribute to Joseph Estrada,” was launched at the dinner.
The Puwersa ng Masang Pilipino (PMP) of Estrada had earlier forged an alliance with Binay's Partido Demokra¬tiko Pilipino-Lakas ng Bayan (PDP-Laban) to form the United Nationalist Alliance (UNA).
“We have only one list for Presi¬dent, that's Vice President Binay. With regard to his (Binay) vice president, there's none yet,” Estrada said in an in¬terview as he immediately rejected the idea of him playing the role of Binay's vice president come 2016.
"No! No way! I've been the vice president,” protested Estrada who is turning 75 on Thursday, April 19.
“No more. I'm through with the national. I've been a mayor, senator, vice president, and president. I think that is so much already for me. I've tried it in the last election but sad to say I didn't make it. I'd rather not,” he insisted, pointing out that his sons Senator Jinggoy Estrada and San Juan Rep. JV Ejercito are already in the na¬tional level. “So I'd rather give them the chance to be up there,” he said.
Erap For Mayor In Manila?
On the other hand, Estrada was not categorical when it comes to the local level, admitting he has “several offers” for him to run as mayor of Manila, his birthplace.
