An ally of President Benigno Aquino 3rd who did not sign an impeachment complaint against Supreme Court (SC) Chief Justice Renato Corona was stripped of his committee chairmanship in the House of Representatives, it was learned on Wednesday.
Rep. Hermilando Mandanas of Batangas, a member of the President’s Liberal Party, confirmed that he was fired from his post.
“I was informed by the Speaker that this [firing] is what the administration wants,” Mandanas said.
The lawmaker added that issues raised against him “included my call for IRA (Internal Revenue Allotment) releases and my decision not to sign the [impeachment] complaint, which I find unacceptable.”
Mandanas is convinced that the IRA funding should include the collection of the Bureau of Customs and he has repeatedly pushed for such scheme publicly, a position contrary to the Palace’s position that such proposal should be first decided by the Department of Justice and the Bureau of Internal Revenue.
