BI Urged to Computerize POEA for Easy OFW Verification Process

The recruitment industry urged Saturday the Bureau of Immigration (BI) to establish a computed link with the Philippine Overseas Employment Administration (POEA) to fast-track the verification on the travel documents of overseas Filipino workers (OFW).

Revealing the contents of his letter addressed to BI Commissioner Ricardo David, Jr., Federated Associations of Manpower Exporters, Inc. (FAME) President Alfredo Palmiery said the faster verification on the overseas employment certificate (OEC), which is issued by POEA, will reduce the number of unnecessary off-loading of OFWs from their flights.

“We deplored the current practice of some BI agents in asking for work contracts, certificate of employments, PRC licenses, and other questions which have unnerved some OFWs resulting in uncalled off-loading resulting in the delays of departing OFWs,” Palmiery said.

FAME is a recruitment association composed of 12 industry groups, which deploy OFWs abroad.

Meanwhile, Palmiery also said the BI should also study the inclusion of additional safety features on the OECs, organize a meeting with the stakeholders in the industry with the Embassies from other countries for visa confirmation.
