Lawmakers want live coverage of GMA trial

NOW that criminal charges had been filed against former President Gloria Arroyo, her upcoming trial should be covered and broadcast live on television so that the people would be able to monitor the case, lawmakers said on Sunday.

Rep. Angelo Palmones of Alyansa ng mga Grupong Haligi ng Agham at Teknolohiya para sa Mamamayan (Agham) party-list and Rep. Joseph Victor Ejercito of San Juan City (Metro Manila) strongly suggested live media coverage of hearings on an electoral-sabotage case filed against Mrs. Arroyo and several others.

The two lawmakers explained that the live TV coverage would guarantee transparency and allow the public to see how the case is proceeding.

“The public demands full transparency. This is also an opportunity for the court to prove that congresswoman Gloria Arroyo gets a fair trial. Maybe it’s best to have it broadcast [live],” Palmones said.

Ejercito agreed, saying that a live coverage should be allowed, considering that the extraordinary case also involved the millions whose votes were not counted and the thousands more who were prevented from voting in the 2004 and 2007 elections.

“I am for live coverage because this is what the Filipino people have been waiting for,” said Ejercito, whose father, former President Joseph Estrada, was also arrested and jailed for plunder.
