By Helen Flores Phil Star - MANILA, Philippines - Rains will continue to prevail over the country this week due to typhoon “Kabayan” and a low-pressure area spotted off Ilocos Sur yesterday, the state weather bureau said.
The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said Kabayan maintained its strength and slowed down as it moved northward yesterday morning.
As of 2 p.m. yesterday, the eye of Kabayan was spotted at 1,005 kilometers east-northeast of Casiguran, Aurora, with maximum sustained winds of 175 kilometers per hour near the center and gustiness of up to 210 kph.
The typhoon is expected to move northward at seven kph.
No storm warning signals were raised as of yesterday afternoon.
“This weather disturbance is too far to directly affect any part of the country,” PAGASA said.
However, it is expected to bring 10 to 25 millimeters of rain per hour within the 800 km diameter of the typhoon.
Kabayan is expected to be 1,020 east of Aparri, Cagayan this morning; 1,060 km east northeast of Aparri tomorrow morning; and 990 km northeast of Basco, Batanes by Wednesday morning.
It was expected to leave the Philippine area of responsibility on Thursday or Friday.
Meanwhile, the weather bureau spotted an active low pressure area 290 km west southwest of Sinait, Ilocos Sur at 2 p.m. yesterday.
PAGASA said the low pressure area is expected to bring moderate to heavy rains over the western section of Central and Northern Luzon which may trigger flashfloods and landslides.
PAGASA weather forecaster Aldzar Aurelio said the low pressure area is expected to develop into a tropical cyclone.
It will be named “Lando” once it intensifies into a tropical depression.
Aurelio said the new weather disturbance was not expected to make landfall in any part of the country as it will move toward Vietnam based on the latest numerical models of PAGASA.
Graciano Yumul, PAGASA supervising undersecretary, said the low pressure area could bring five to 25 mm of rain per hour over western Luzon, including Metro Manila.
Kabayan is the 11th tropical cyclone to enter the country this year and the fifth weather disturbance for the month of July.
PAGASA said it expects two or three tropical cyclones to enter the country this month.
