The family of super bike champion Maico Buncio has yet to come to terms with his death.

They still have many unanswered questions regarding the accident that claimed Buncio's life.

“Namatay ang anak ko na may foreign body sa katawan niya. Anong ginagawa ng bakal sa racetrack [when] there should be safety measures para kumarera ka,” said Buncio’s mother, Mylene.

Buncio was thrown off some 100 meters from his bike and was impaled on a protruding reed bar in an unfinished barrier on the Clark Speedway Circuit.

Driver's error?

The operator of the Clark Speedway Circuit is conducting its own investigation into the incident.

Maraming factors [na maaring nagcause ng accident]. P’wede siyang nagitgit, p’wedeng may problema ‘yung motor or p’wedeng nagkaroon ng driver's error. Hindi natin alam,” said Bong Castro, Clark Speedway Circuit spokesman.

Though admitting the track was undergoing renovation, the speedway operator insisted the riders and the sanctioning bodies should have inspected the track before the race.

“Pagka ganoon, may nakita silang hindi maganda, sinasabi kaagad sa organizers, ‘o, ayusin nyo ito’. Inaayos naman kaagad ng organizers,” said Castro.

“Nobody really wanted it to happen,” he said. “I would say na nagulat din kami na may namatay.” – With reports from TJ Manotoc, ABS-CBN News and ANC
