MANILA, Philippines - The snatching of an old woman's earrings was caught on video while she was shopping in Divisoria Friday noon. The camera also caught other people merely dumbstruck as the assailant ran away.
In a matter of seconds, the woman lost her earrings to a young man who crept up from behind her and tore the ornaments from her ears, leaving her earlobes almost bloodied.
She was able to report the crime to barangay officials but they were unable to arrest the suspect. She said the earrings were dear to her because these were given as a present by her husband.
The barangay chairman, Domingo Vacal, said such crimes in the shopping district have been on the rise - from three times a day to five times daily - since September.
Police have repeatedly warned the public to be wary when shopping in congested areas like Divisoria.
