POEA warns the public against employment scams in the Internet

The POEA warns the public on the proliferation of employment scams in the internet and at the same time offers helpful tips on how to avoid them.

Administrator Hans Leo J. Cacdac yesterday issued a warning on the proliferation of
employment scams in the internet and at the same time offered helpful tips on how
to avoid them.

Cacdac said more applicants use the internet to find jobs and with the popularity of
internet-ready gadgets, and job search and social networking websites, they become
easy victims of illegal recruiters and job scammers.

Cacdac said his office has received numerous queries and complaints about
unsolicited e-mails, websites, and other job advertisements that offer employment
overseas which were found to be fake.

As modus operandi, these unscrupulous persons would build bogus company
websites or blogs, advertise in legitimate online job search companies, send mass emails, or enter discussion boards or forums that are frequented by overseas Filipino workers to lure their victims, Cacdac said.

To avoid getting duped from these job scams, the POEA advised the jobseekers to be vigilant and watch out for signs that may be indicative of a scam job offer. These include:

  1. The website is crudely made with incomplete links and information about the company
  2. Applicants are asked to send resume and application through postal mail or drop boxes
  3. The e-mail address used has nothing to do with the real company
  4. The job offer received through e-mail is unsolicited
  5. Mistakes in English grammar and spelling in the website or e-mail
  6. Applicants are asked to pay in advance through a courier or remittance company supposedly for training, work permit, and other travel documents
  7. Money-back guarantee offer
  8. The salary and other benefits such as free food and accommodation are toogood-to-be- true
  9. Applicants are asked to send details of bank or credit card account
