ENRILE PROPOSES WHOLE-DAY CJ HEARINGSC

MANILA, Philippines (3rd UPDATE) - To reach an early end for the impeachment trial of Chief Justice Renato Corona, Senate President Juan Ponce Enrile on Tuesday proposed a whole-day schedule for the proceedings.

If his proposal is to be followed, hearings will be held from 9 a.m. to 12 noon and 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. from Monday to Thursday.

He said this can be implemented starting March 12 if both the prosecution and defense panels agree.

"I'm going to call the two panels for a meeting and offer to them a new schedule of hearing," Enrile told reporters.

This would mean there would be no lawmaking sessions from March 12 until the Senate goes on recess on March 23.

But Enrile is willing to do it, if only to speed up the proceedings.

"We are trying to show the people that as far as the Senate is concerned, the members of the Senate and the Senate itself are both willing to work overtime in order to satisfy the desire of the public to finish this case at the soonest possible time," he said.
