PALACE: NEXT NBI CHIEF MUST BE TOUGH AND CLEAN

MANILA, Philippines - President Aquino directed Justice Secretary Leila de Lima to find a new director of the National Bureau of Investigation who is “tough and clean” with an impressive track record on law enforcement.

Presidential Spokesman Secretary Edwin Lacierda said instructions of the President were very clear and he wants someone who is tough and someone who is obviously clean.

“Tough because it’s an organization that will deal with criminal elements and you have to gain the respect of those people within and without the organization,” said Lacierda.

“Ang kailangan, ang sinabi lang ni Pangulo, ang utos kay Secretary Leila de Lima ay maghanap ng isang NBI chief na tough and clean,” he said.

These should be among the criteria for choosing the next NBI chief that the Department of Justice would recommend to Aquino.

“I think that’s part of it. Well, if you’re talking about somebody who’s clean, that certainly requires a track record of being clean,” Lacierda said.

He also refused to say if the next NBI director would be a lawyer or not.

The only NBI director that was not a lawyer was police general Reynaldo Wycoco.
