A United States District Judge granted a request for a temporary restraining order barring the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey from requiring nurses to help perform abortions.
The order was issued on November 3.
Filipino nurses were among those who filed a lawsuit in federal court on October 31 against the university hospital.
They claimed that the hospital violated state and federal laws by requiring nurses to aid abortion patients before and after procedure.
The nurses said the hospital needs to honor an existing policy that exempts them when they refuse, if it goes against their religious beliefs or morals.
They said no health professional should be forced to choose between assisting abortion procedures or face consequences at work.
