Money sent home by overseas Filipino workers grew by 5.4 percent year-on-year in January, the slowest pace in two years and two months since November 2009 when money

MANILA, Philippines - Remittances from Filipinos abroad grew at a slower pace of 5.4 percent in January on the back of economic growth concerns in advanced economies led by the US as well as the sovereign debt crisis in Europe, the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) reported yesterday.

OFW Remittances Seen Slowing in 2012

British banking giant Hong Kong and Shanghai Banking Corp. Ltd. (HSBC) sees a slower 5% growth in remittances from overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) due to external developments.

In a report, HSBC economist Trinh Nguyen said the growth of remittances from OFWs would slow down to about five percent this year from 6.9% last year.

New Middle East Job Laws Threaten OFW Remittances

The World Bank warned in a report released yesterday that indigenization programs have raised concerns for future remittances from overseas workers.

The report pointed out, however, “While the indigenization may not affect remittances in the near term, they highlight the importance of destination country policy changes for the future sustainability of remittance flows to developing countries.”
