The Philippine national men’s basketball team started slowly once more, but woke up in time in the third quarter to run away with a 77-71 win over Jordan in the FIBA Asia Championship on Friday at the Mall of Asia Arena. Like in its first outing against Saudi Arabia, Gilas Pilipinas was luggish in the opening half, falling behind, 38-33, at halftime.

FIBA Asia Champion's Cup: PHL's best finish in 15 years

The Philippines hadn’t made it to the Final Four of the FIBA-Asia Champions Cup since Hapee Toothpaste represented the country to bag the crown at the Ninoy Aquino Stadium in 1996.
So the breakthrough this year was significant for Smart Gilas. There were close calls along the way. In 2005, the Philippines was eliminated by Jordan in the quarterfinals and wound up fifth. It was the same finish in 2009 when Gilas lost a 76-71 decision to Al Arabi of Qatar in the semifinals.
Lebanon arranges title showdown with champs Iran

Al Riyadi-Lebanon clinched the second finals berth in the 2011 FIBA-Asia Champions Cup after dispatching Al Rayyan-Qatar, 71-52, on Saturday at the PhilSports Arena in Pasig City.
Ismail Abdel Moneim Ismail Ahmed tallied 25 points and 12 points as Lebanon takes on Mahram-Iran in Sunday’s final at 6 p.m.

FIBA-Asia: Gilas 5 downs Iraq, gears up vs Jordan

Pilipinas-Smart Gilas geared up for its crucial match-up with ASU-Jordan after coming away with a 74-64 win over Duhok-Iraq for its third straight victory in the 2011 FIBA Asia Champions Cup at the PhilSports Arena in Pasig City on Tuesday night.
Marcus Douthit finished with 14 points and 15 rebounds while Mark Barroca added 12 markers and eight assists. The Nationals stake their perfect record when they take on ASU-Jordan on Wednesday with the Group A top spot on the line. Both teams hold a 3-0 win-loss record.
